Effective control of mosquitoes with the award-winning Wals method in Kyrenia

The first applications of the award-winning Wals method, which is used in the world, in Kyrenia were carried out in Girne Karaoğlanoğlu region, under the control of Girne Municipality teams together with technical experts.

According to the statement made by the municipality, efforts to combat the Asian Tiger Mosquito, whose species determination was confirmed by the official sources of the country towards the end of last year and there was no official data about its presence on the island, were intensified by the Environmental Health and Spraying Unit of the Girne Municipality Health Branch.

According to the statement, technical experts state that the Asian Tiger Mosquito can breed in many small containers such as old car tires, under pots, small buckets, debris, ornamental pools, cemetery flower beds. Pointing out that hundreds of thousands of such resources can be found in the city, experts stated that it is almost “impossible” to detect all of these resources one by one and implement them, so the WALS methodology brings a new solution in integrated struggle.

In the statement, it was stated that the applications against the Asian Tiger Mosquito, which can cause diseases such as Zika Virus, Dengue Fever, Chikungunya, West Nile Virus, are carried out with a completely environmentally friendly methodology. .

– Şenkul: “Biological spraying is important for environmental health”

Girne Mayor Murat Şenkul stated that the importance of biological control in terms of environmental health in the country is better understood with each passing day, and said that although biological control has a higher economic cost, it is preferred because it does not contain carcinogenic substances in terms of citizen and public health. Emphasizing the importance of the public being “sensitive” to the issue in order to ensure success in the fight against mosquitoes throughout the city, Şenkul urged all people to contribute to the mosquito struggle with “small but vital” measures that can be taken in individual living spaces.

In the statement made by the municipality, the measures that the public can take in their individual living spaces in the fight against mosquitoes are listed as follows:

“Empty the water in the containers, flower pots, and unused car tires in your garden where water accumulates; renew the water you put in containers for street animals within 3 days at the latest; change the water in the ornamental ponds frequently or use fish that feed on the larvae; drain unused swimming pools; renew broken manhole covers; close open repositories and replenish rotten repositories.”
